About the Opportunity
Cook Shire Council is seeking a Plumber to join the busy Buildings and Facilities team in Cooktown, Far North Queensland. This role focuses on maintaining and enhancing Council-managed residential, commercial and public facilities across the Shire.
Reporting to the Plumbing and Drainage Inspector, the successful candidate will play an essential part in providing functional, safe and well-maintained facilities for the Cook Shire community. This includes performing routine and unscheduled plumbing and drainage work, as well as participating in new capital projects as needed.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working hands-on in diverse environments, engaging with different tasks and solving practical challenges in real-time. With each project, you’ll be contributing to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all who live in and visit Cook Shire.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting routine and unscheduled plumbing and drainage tasks within Council-managed facilities
- Performing installation, construction, and maintenance work on infrastructure across residential and commercial properties
- Working on valves, pipework, sewer systems, water property services and pump stations
- Performing roof repairs, confined space tasks and general plumbing and drainage repairs as needed
- Ensuring all work complies with plumbing standards, codes and WHS regulations
- Assisting in the planning and forecasting of major maintenance tasks and capital projects
- Monitoring and documenting work quality, timelines and costs
- Responding to public enquiries and maintenance requests in a prompt and courteous manner
- Supervising and mentoring junior staff and apprentices as needed
- Contributing to a collaborative team culture and supporting the Council’s goals for community well-being

Essential Requirements:
- Relevant qualifications and experience in plumbing and drainage
- A current Queensland Occupational Open Plumbers/Drainers Licence
- A Queensland Class "C" Driver’s Licence
- General Construction Safety "White" Card
- Physical fitness and the ability to handle manual tasks and confined spaces
- A keen problem-solver who can think quickly and tackle challenges head-on
- A team player with a strong sense of responsibility and willingness to help others succeed
