Funded by the Queensland Government, the Coen Healthy Dogs Healthy Communities Program aims to improve the overall health and wellbeing of the residents and their companion animals in Coen.

In many First Nations communities, dogs play a key part in family life, serving as companions, guardians and working animals. 
Cook Shire Council is seeking to appoint a community First Nations Animal Management Worker to support the delivery of the Healthy Dogs Healthy Communities Program.

About the role

We’re looking for a passionate and community-minded individual to support the Coen Healthy Dogs Healthy Communities Program. This role is all about working with the community, supporting responsible pet ownership, and assisting with animal management.
You’ll play a key role in keeping Coen’s pets and people safe and healthy!
Please note:  to perform this role it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld).

What you'll be doing

  • Supporting Council’s Local Laws and Animal Management Officers in the Coen area
  • Engaging with the community to promote responsible pet ownership
  • Assisting with veterinary visits, animal health programs, and public health initiatives
  • Helping manage stray or nuisance animals and supporting local enforcement measures
  • Keeping accurate records and reports of animal management activities
  • Maintaining the Coen Animal Health Hub

What we're looking for

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about local laws and public health related to animals
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with the community
  • Ability to handle and manage domestic animals safely
  • Team player with initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Basic administrative and record-keeping skills
  • Willingness to undertake training
