Cook Shire Council is seeking a qualified and experienced Carpenter to join our Buildings and Facilities team. 

This position is responsible for providing a broad range of commercial and residential construction and maintenance services across Cooktown and surrounding areas. The role includes inspection, repair, and maintenance of Council-owned assets such as buildings, park and street furniture, fencing, and other infrastructure.

What you'll be doing

  • Undertake commercial and residential construction and maintenance activities on Council buildings and facilities.
  • Deliver construction work to relevant building standards with high-level finishing.
  • Undertake fabrication of furniture and other carpentry tasks.
  • Assist with prioritising and managing maintenance requests through Council’s customer request system.
  • Supervise and mentor apprentices, trade assistants and contractors when required.
  • Work both independently and as part of a small team to ensure high-quality workmanship and timely completion of construction and maintenance projects.
  • Accurately complete documentation, including material take-offs, timesheets, and work records
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members and the public.

What we're looking for

  • Certificate of Competency in Carpentry and Joinery.
  • Current QBCC Licence.
  • Demonstrated experience in commercial and residential building construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proven ability to complete daily work records accurately and on time.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Workplace Health and Safety practices.
  • Current Queensland Class “C” Driver’s Licence.
  • Current Construction White Card.
